Pyjamas have been the most common form of nightwear for men since the 1930s, when they started to take over from the traditional nightshirt. The name derives from the Persian word ‘payjama’, meaning “leg covering”, describing the traditional loose fitting clothing worn in south and west Asia. They came to Britain with the colonials returning from the East in the 1870s, becoming increasingly popular over the years.
