Brand History



René Lacoste was the French tennis superstar who founded the Lacoste clothing label in 1929. As one of the sporting icons of the day, it was a shock when he was forced to give up professional tennis due to ill health whilst still a young man. However, never one to do anything by halves, Lacoste turned his attention to sportswear, and in 1933 he produced a cotton pique tennis shirt which is widely regarded as the beginning of specialist performance clothing in the sport. His on-court nickname, “the crocodile”, was the inspiration for the logo which adorns all Lacoste clothing to this day.

Although still heavily associated with French tennis, Lacoste is now a major worldwide fashion brand, adopted by celebrities and style icons around the globe. It is now a complete clothing collection which is still heavily influenced by its sportswear heritage, but with a more stylish outlook. Recent spin-off label Lacoste Live was created to develop a more youthful, vibrant aspect to the brand, allowing the original Lacoste label to focus on classic, timeless pieces with their trademark relaxed elegance.

The modern Lacoste collection consists of simple, understated garments in a wide variety of colours. The crocodile logo takes pride of place on each item, signifying an authentic sports heritage and superb attention to detail. The classic Lacoste tennis shirt is still at the heart of the collection, as relevant today as it has ever been.
