Dating all the way back to 1830, Woolrich is the oldest manufacturer of outdoor wear in the United States. The business was initially started up when founders John Rich and Daniel McCormick formulated the idea to produce durable, warm fabrics for the wives of hunters, loggers and trappers, and they later became involved in manufacturing clothing supplies and woolen blankets for the American Civil War, World War I and Richard E. Byrd's Antarctic expedition.
Woolrich played a large role in the emergence of the leisure industry at the beginning of the 20th century, producing outdoor clothing for the general public to wear, as they became able to enjoy holidays and leisure time outside. The brand started out by creating a range of wool shirts, trousers, jackets and caps. It was the 1970s when the classic Woolrich down filled parka came about however, as they were recruited to design and produce clothing that could protect workers from the subzero conditions as they constructed the Alaska pipeline.
Today, Woolrich is known for producing durable and comfortable clothing of the best quality, for men, women and children. Their speciality lies in quilted and fur trimmed jackets and coats, however their junior collection encompasses a range of utilitarian style casual wear.
