Brand History

Converse has humble origins; it was founded in 1908 by Marquis Mills Converse, and produced everyday rubber-soled shoes for men, women and children. These were practical shoes, particularly good during unkind weather. By the early 1910’s this leading name in footwear was manufacturing some four thousand pairs of shoes each day. In 1917 the company turned a corner with the introduction of the Converse basketball shoe, but it was in 1921 when the business really took off. That was when basketball player Charles “Chuck” Taylor joined the company as a salesman and later an ambassador for the company, and the Chuck Taylor All Star shoe was born. Over the years, and depending where you live, these iconic shoes have had various nicknames including Cons, Connie’s, Chucks, Chuckers and Convos. Originally they were only created in black, but in 1947 a white variety was introduced and in 1966 Converse launched this range in a selection of colours. In 1986 they launched a new range known as “the weapon”. They were produced in colours designed to match the kit of the basketball teams they were made for.
