Founded in 1927, the origins of Castañer stretch back as far as 1776, with the birth of Rafael Castañer, the first espadrille maker in the family. Over two centuries later, the brand was born, originally set up by Luis Castañer and his cousin Tomás Serra, and later taken over by Lorenzo and Isabel Castañer of the next generation. In the 60s they met Yves Saint Laurent in Paris, who went on to commission the first wedge espadrille in history. It was his high profile influence that transformed the traditional worker's shoe into a piece of luxury.
The brand now has stockists in 35 countries and has been seen on the likes of Hollywood actresses including Scarlett Johannson, Jackie Kennedy and Salvador Dali.
